Is this something I can fix myself?

Quick guidance before you book. When in doubt, we’re here 24/7.

Car lockout

If you have a spare key at home, someone can bring it. If the car is running and locked with keys inside, or you have no spare, a pro can usually unlock without damage in minutes. DIY kits exist but can scratch doors or trigger airbags — not recommended on modern cars.

Key won’t turn / ignition

Try wiggling the steering wheel (unlock the column) and ensuring the car is in Park. If it still doesn’t turn, the ignition cylinder or key may be worn. This is best left to a technician to avoid breaking the key or cylinder.

Lost key / need a new one

Basic key copies can be done at a hardware store. Transponder (chip) keys and proximity fobs must be programmed to your car — that requires a locksmith or dealer. We can cut and program on-site for most makes and models.

Prevention tips

After service, keep these in mind to avoid another emergency.

  • Lubricate locks once or twice a year with a graphite or silicone lock lubricant (not oil or WD-40).
  • Get a spare key before you lose the only one — duplication is cheaper than a full replacement and programming.
  • Keep a spare somewhere safe — at home, with family, or in a magnetic box (use discretion for security).
  • Battery in fob — if the remote stops working, replace the battery first; it’s often the cause.

Why do prices vary? Cost education

Transparent breakdown so you know what you’re paying for.

Transponder keys cost more than basic keys

Basic metal keys can be cut on a machine. Transponder keys contain a chip that talks to your car’s immobilizer. We have to program that chip to your vehicle, which requires time, equipment, and the right blank for your make/model. Blanks and programming vary by vehicle — some are $50, others $200+. We’ll always give you an estimate before starting.

Time of day (emergency surcharge)

24/7 service means we have technicians on call at night and on weekends. A small surcharge helps cover that availability. You’ll always see it in the upfront estimate.

Vehicle make and model

Some cars use standard blanks and quick programming; others (e.g. certain European or luxury brands) need more expensive parts and procedures. Our cost calculator uses your vehicle to give you a range before you book.
